Risperdal

bipolar_disorderRisperdal, also known by its generic name Resperidone, is an oblong, yellow pill imprinted with RIS 0.25, JANSSEN. It is considered an atypical antipsychotic medication that alters the chemical composition and balances natural substances in the brain. It is used to treat the following mental/mood disorders:

• Schizophrenia
• Bipolar mania
• Irritability in autistic children

SIDE EFFECTS OF RISPERDAL

Risperdal can cause serious side effects. Discontinue the medication and call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects:
• Irregular heartbeat or tachycardia
• Confusion
• Fever, excessive sweating
• Stiffness in muscles, muscle spasms in your tongue, eyes, neck, or jaw
• Convulsions, trembling hands, drooling, or difficulty swallowing
• Flu-like symptoms
• Nosebleeds
• White blisters or sores on your lips or inside your mouth
• Fainting
• Penile erection lasting longer than 4 hours

Less serious side effects include skin rashes, sensitivity to heat or cold, increased appetite, weight gain, nausea/vomiting, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, headache, dizziness, and fatigue.

PRECAUTIONS

While Risperdal is very effective in treating the disorders for which it is described, these facts should be considered while taking this medication:
• Should be not be used to treat dementia patients, as it can cause pneumonia, heart failure, rapid heartbeat, stroke, or sudden death if prescribed for older adults.
• Do not give to children unless prescribed by a doctor.
• May cause dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids while on Risperdal, especially in hot weather.
• Reactions and alertness may be impaired. Avoid drinking alcohol, driving or operating machinery.
• May increase blood sugar levels and make diabetes symptoms worse. Watch for increased urination and thirst and check blood sugar levels frequently.
• May cause elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels promoting heart disease.

Risperdal has a lot of side effects. However, it helps patients deal with daily life and to think clearly. It has been used successfully in treating adults as well as adolescents with ADHD, anger issues and violent behavior problems.
